What tickets do you need to work on a WA mine site?

Getting onto a West Australian mine site comes down to paperwork as much as skill. Turn up with the right tickets and you can start within days. Turn up without them and the best resume in the Goldfields won't get you through the gate.

Here's what WA employers usually ask for, roughly in the order you'll need it.

1. Construction induction (White Card)

The White Card is proof you've completed general construction induction training (unit CPCWHS1001). Many mine sites, shutdown crews and civil projects in WA ask for it, even for roles that aren't strictly construction. It doesn't expire, but keep the card or a clear photo of it, because you'll be asked for it again and again. Make sure you do the course with a registered training organisation (RTO) whose training is accepted in WA.

2. Standard 11 (generic mining induction)

Standard 11 is a generic mining induction many WA operations expect before you arrive. It covers hazard awareness, safety systems and how a mine site works. It is not the same as a site induction. You'll still do that on day one, but having Standard 11 done shows an employer you're ready to go.

3. Pre-employment medical and drug & alcohol test

Almost every mining role in WA starts with a pre-employment medical and a drug and alcohol screen. These are arranged by the employer or the labour hire company once you're shortlisted. You don't book them yourself. Be honest on the forms and bring your ID.

4. Licences that open more doors

  • Driver's licence: a current C class licence is the baseline. A manual licence helps on many sites.

  • Heavy vehicle licences (HR, HC, MC): needed for truck and road train roles.

  • High risk work licences: forklift (LF), dogging, rigging, scaffolding and EWP work need the right licence class.

  • Trade qualifications: fitters, boilermakers, electricians and auto electricians need their trade papers. Bring copies of your certificates.

5. Short courses employers like to see

  • Working at heights

  • Confined space entry

  • First aid and CPR (HLTAID011)

  • Gas test atmospheres

None of these are always required, but they make your application stand out, especially for shutdown and maintenance crews.
